  1. What is web hosting

When you buy website hosting, you are leasing space on a web servers hard drive to store your HTML and graphic files ready to be sent to whoever wants to view them.

  2. What is a web server

A web server is very similar to your home (or business) computer, and has hard drive/s, a processor, memory etc, but the key difference is that it is permanently connected into the world wide web through high-speed data network.

  3. Linux

The choice of professionals, Linux is a modern variation of Unix, which traditionally has been the platform of choice of large companies, governments, banks etc. It's very powerful, and designed for large networks. More than two thirds of the Internet runs on some variation of Unix or Linux. It's very inexpensive, but requires a high level of professional expertise to administer (your hosting company does that - you don't have to worry). It's extremely reliable and can handle a huge amount of traffic, sites, databases etc. There are lots of free programs, scripts and other tools for webmasters who host their sites on Linux systems, but many require a degree of expertise and/or patience to make work. Having said that, you'll be overjoyed at the huge range of free stuff available for your site, and with a little work and patience, it possible to build very powerful, dynamic websites, applications and database systems for practically nothing! And the irony is that while this is all very cheap, you'll be choosing the route that virtually all the big sites take. Powerful, yet easy-to-learn scripting languages like PHP, Perl and Java can help you produce top-level dynamic web sites, web applications and databased-backed systems at the very top levels, yet at almost no cost at all if you can afford the time to spend working on your site.

  4. MS Windows Server

Windows Server has one major thing going for it, and that's ease of use. If you intend to use ASP (Active Server Pages), this is the choice for you. Many people use ASP to connect to a database and produce dynamic web sites. Plus, there are a number of tools out there to make life even easier, such as those from Macromedia, which has tools that do most of the coding for you! However, there's a heavy price to pay for all this convenience. Macromedia's products are not cheap, and because of licence fees, all MS services are expensive to maintain and therefore hosting companies have to charge more. If you choose MS Windows, everything costs money. While thousands of free scripts and programs are available for Linux - nothing in the Microsoft world is free. For example, if you need a powerful database, MySQL for Linux is an extremely robust choice and with most hosting companies, costs nothing extra. To match this performance on MS Windows, you'll need SQL Server, which costs hundreds of pounds per annum.

  5. What is a subdomain

Consider a subdomain as an extension of your domain. For example, your site is www.example.com. A subdomain would be test.example.com, and another would be webhosting.example.com.
